Spiral Cone Fidget

Description

A print-in-place mechanism, built as one continuous assembly. The spiral collapses through its own coil and rises again in a single motion, and it comes off the printer already moving — no assembly needed, it prints ready to spin.

That is harder than it sounds. Every rotating surface is separated by a clearance measured in fractions of a millimetre: wide enough that the layers never fuse during the build, tight enough that the finished spiral runs true with no play. Get it wrong by a hair and the cone either welds solid or rattles. This one is dialled in.

The design runs as an inner and an outer body, which is what makes the dual finishes possible: the two are printed in different colours and turn against one another through the coil.
